I can only make one Group
You tried to create a Group, or make a Map, or share for longer than eight hours, and the upgrade screen appeared instead. That is the free allowance: one created Group, one owned Map, eight-hour sessions — see the free allowance.
Nothing has gone wrong and nothing you already have has changed.
The three places you meet it

In all three the action simply did not happen. You were not charged, nothing was created halfway, and closing the upgrade screen puts you back where you were.
What to do without subscribing
Each limit has a way round it that costs nothing.
One created Group. Reuse the Group you have — rename is not available, but a Group is just a set of people and there is nothing occasion-specific in it. Or have somebody else create the second one and invite you: being a member of any number of Groups is free, and any member can hand out the Invite Code. Or delete the Group you no longer need, which frees the slot.
One owned Map. Install a public Map instead of making one — find and install a map — and if somebody in your Group has made one, they can let the Group use it directly without you owning anything: let your Group use an unpublished map. Deleting a Map you own also frees the slot.
Eight-hour sessions. Start another one when the first ends. Tapping a length of time while a session is still running moves its end time rather than restarting it, so a full day is a couple of taps rather than a subscription — see Start Sharing with a Group.
What subscribing changes
Only the caps. Nothing about how the app works, and nothing about what your friends see. See what Pro gets you.
If you had more than one before
Then you are not hitting a limit for the first time — you are looking at a lapse, and the rules are different and better than they look. Nothing is deleted: if your subscription lapses.
