Your display name and photo

Your display name is what everybody in your Groups sees beside your dot on the map and in the member list. Nobody sees your phone number, so this is the only thing that identifies you to them — which is why the app asks for it once, just after your first sign-in, under DISPLAY NAME. A first name is fine, and the field says so.

To change it later, open the Profile tab and tap your name. It updates everywhere at once, for everybody, including in Groups you joined before the change.

A photo is optional. With one, your dot on the map is your picture; without one it is your initials. Either way you are equally easy to find, so skipping it costs nothing but recognisability in a crowded map.

If the app cannot save the name — no connection at that moment — it offers Try again and Continue for now. Continuing is safe: you keep using the app, and the name can be set from Profile whenever you next have a signal.
