I got a new phone

There is nothing to transfer and nothing to back up. Your account is your phone number, so signing in on the new phone with the same number is the move.

What to do

  1. Install FriendTrack on the new phone.
  2. Sign in with the same phone number — see sign in with your phone number.
  3. Allow location when the app asks, the first time you start Sharing.
  4. Allow notifications.

If it has been about three months or more since you last used FriendTrack, the sign-in stops on a screen headed Confirm these are yours and shows how many Groups and Maps are saved under your number. Tap Yes, these are mine — see confirm these are yours for what the other button does.

That is all. Do not delete your account on the old phone first: that would delete the account itself, not just the app’s copy of it — see delete your account.

What comes with you

  • Every Group you are in, with the same members. Nobody has to invite you again.
  • Your display name and photo.
  • Your Maps — the ones you made and the ones you installed.
  • Your notification choices.
  • FriendTrack Pro, if you have it. It follows the app-store account rather than the phone; if it does not appear, use restore — subscribe, restore, cancel.

What does not come with you

Any sharing session that was running. Sharing is fed by the phone that started it, so a session you started on the old phone is not continued by the new one — start a fresh one, and pick a new length of time. See Start Sharing with a Group.

Permissions do not come with you either: location and notifications are granted per phone, so the new one asks again.

The old phone stays signed in — sign out of it

⚠️ Signing in on the new phone does not sign out the old one. Each phone keeps its own session, so a phone you have stopped using is still signed into your account and could still start a sharing session as you.

Before you sell, return or pass on the old phone: open the Profile tab on it and tap Logout, then delete the app. Deleting the app alone is enough in practice, but signing out first is the step that ends the session rather than hiding it.

⚠️ If you are also changing your number, this page is the wrong one and the answer is substantially harder, because the number is the account rather than a detail of it. That case has its own page: I changed my phone number.

If sign-in on the new phone does not work

Nearly always the verification text: the code didn’t arrive.
