Which map a friend is on

Everybody you can see on your map is on the same Map as you. A friend who is sharing but is looking at a different Map is not drawn on yours — not because anything is wrong, but because the two of you are looking at pictures of different places.

How the app tells you

When somebody in your Group is using a Map you do not have open, the map screen says so by name, along with who is using it, and offers Install so you can see the same view. Installing a Map does not remove the one you have; you end up with both and choose between them.

If you already have that Map, switching to it is one tap rather than an install.

Switching Map by hand

  1. Open the My Maps tab.
  2. Under YOUR MAPS you get every Map you have, each marked Owned, Installed or Shared.
  3. Tap the one you want. That becomes your Current Map, and the map screen shows it.

The same screen has ADD A MAP at the top, with Add a public map for the catalog and Create your own for the web Map Editor.

What your Group learns from your choice

Which Map you have chosen is visible to the Groups you share with — that is what makes the “your friend is using X” prompt possible at all. It is the name of the Map and nothing more. See pick your Current Map.

When nobody has a Map at all

FriendTrack works without one. You still see who is sharing and how fresh their Position (what other apps call your location) is; what you do not get is a picture of the venue to place them on.
