Find and install a map

Using a venue’s own branded FriendTrack app? Your app carries the venue’s name and shows a Powered by FriendTrack note, and it is locked to that venue’s Map. That build has no My Maps tab, no catalog and nothing to switch between, so this page does not apply to it. Everything else here is the same app underneath and works exactly as described — Groups, Sharing, Meeting Points, notifications and your account — and you can share a Group with somebody using ordinary FriendTrack.

Published Maps live in the catalog, which is searchable from inside the app and from the web.

Install one

  1. Open the My Maps tab and tap Add a public map.
  2. Search by the venue’s name, or tap See maps near you under NEARBY to find venues around you. Finding nearby ones needs location permission, and the screen offers Enable if it does not have it.
  3. Tap Install on the one you want. It changes to Installed ✓, and Open takes you straight to it.

Installing adds it to your YOUR MAPS list. It does not make it your Current Map on its own — see pick your Current Map — and it does not start sharing anything.

What you can install

The catalog holds only Maps whose creators published them and which passed review. That is a much smaller set than the number of Maps that exist: plenty are made for one group’s own use and are never listed, and one of those can still be shared with you directly — see let your Group use an unpublished map.

On the free allowance you can hold one Map. Installing a second is part of FriendTrack Pro.

When the venue you want has no Map

⚠️ This is the ordinary case rather than the exception, and it is worth saying plainly: most places have no Map. The catalog covers the venues somebody has taken the trouble to draw, and No maps found usually means nobody has drawn yours rather than that your search was wrong.

Three things you can do:

  • Use FriendTrack without a Map. The Friends list still works, and sharing still works. What you lose is the picture.
  • Ask the venue. An organiser with a site plan already has most of the work done.
  • Make one yourself. It takes a picture of the venue and the coordinates of three points on it, and it is a browser job rather than a phone job: what you need before you start.

If a Map you installed stops working

Installed Maps can be taken out of the catalog by their creator or by a moderator, and what happens to your copy then is not obvious — the map I installed has disappeared is the page for that.
