A new version of this map is available

Using a venue’s own branded FriendTrack app? Your app carries the venue’s name and shows a Powered by FriendTrack note, and it is locked to that venue’s Map. That build has no My Maps tab, no catalog and nothing to switch between, so this page does not apply to it. Everything else here is the same app underneath and works exactly as described — Groups, Sharing, Meeting Points, notifications and your account — and you can share a Group with somebody using ordinary FriendTrack.

The map screen says 🗺️ Map update available, and under it, that a newer version of this map has been published. There is an Update button and a dismiss control, and both are genuine choices.

What has happened

A published Map cannot be changed once it is out — so when its creator wants to fix or improve something, they publish a new Map Version instead. Your copy is untouched by that; what you have been told is that a newer one now exists.

(This is about the map, not about the app. Your app version is at the bottom of the Profile screen and updates itself through your app store.)

Take the update, or stay

What changesIf you tap UpdateIf you stay
The pictureYou get the newer image, which may be recropped or redrawnUnchanged
The Areas of InterestYou get whatever the creator added, renamed or removedUnchanged
CalibrationYou get any corrections they made, so friends may sit in better placesUnchanged, including any errors it has
Your GroupOnly you move. Everybody else chooses for themselvesOnly you stay

The older Map Version keeps working indefinitely. It is not withdrawn, it does not expire, and nothing degrades. That is deliberate: a Map Version being replaced mid-event should not change what anybody is looking at while they are using it.

When to update, and when not to

Update if friends are showing up in slightly wrong places, if the Areas you care about are missing, or if you are not in the middle of anything. Calibration corrections are the commonest reason a creator publishes a new Map Version, and they are exactly what fixes people appearing off by a stand or two.

Stay if you are mid-event and everybody in your Group is on the version you have. Mixed versions are usually fine — everyone still appears in the right real-world place — but a renamed or removed Area means you and a friend may describe the same spot differently for the rest of the day.

Updating later

Dismissing the prompt does not refuse it forever; the newer Map Version stays in the catalog and you can install it whenever you like — find and install a map.

If instead the Map has vanished from YOUR MAPS altogether, that is something else: the map I installed has disappeared.
